Tech Startup Name Generator

Use the free tech startup name generator to get name ideas for your SaaS product, app or tech company – then follow our availability guide.

Startup names carry an unfair amount of weight. Investors, users and future hires all form an impression in the first two seconds, and the name is most of that impression.

This generator mixes your keywords with tech vocabulary – stack, node, data, logic, sync, cloud – and returns short invented names, compound names and clean two-word names. Invented names have the best .com availability, so try that style first.

How to name a tech startup

  • Bias toward invented names. Real words are almost always taken as .com and as trademarks.
  • Keep it to two or three syllables. Anything longer gets shortened by users anyway, and you lose control of the shortening.
  • Check the .com, the .ai and the GitHub handle together. For developer tools the repo name matters as much as the domain.
  • Avoid words that describe a feature you might drop. “InvoiceKit” is a problem the month you add payments.
  • Say it out loud as if on a podcast. If a host cannot repeat it after hearing it once, pick something else.

How to check if your name is available

  1. Search USPTO for the name in the software and SaaS classes.
  2. Check the .com, and decide in advance whether .ai, .io or .co is acceptable to you.
  3. Check social handles and the app store name if you are shipping a mobile app.
  4. Run your state’s entity search before you file the LLC.
  5. Search the name plus your category. If page one is owned by an unrelated product, your SEO starts at a disadvantage.

What to do after you pick a name

  1. Register the domain the same day you pick the name – good startup names get registered within hours.
  2. Form an LLC before you take investment or split equity with a cofounder.
  3. Start keyword research early so the name and the domain line up with what people actually search.
  4. Get a logo and a favicon that hold up at sixteen pixels.
  5. Ship a landing page on fast hosting before launch week.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What makes a good startup name?
A: Short, pronounceable, spellable after one hearing, and available as a .com. Everything after that – meaning, cleverness, story – is secondary. A good story can be attached to an invented name later; a taken domain cannot be fixed.

Q: Should I use .io or .ai instead of .com?
A: They are accepted in tech, but .com still converts better with non-technical buyers and is what people type by default. If you use an alternative extension, own the .com redirect if you can afford it.

Q: Do I need to trademark my startup name?
A: At minimum, clear it against the USPTO database before you raise money. Investors’ counsel will do this anyway, and a conflict discovered late is expensive to unwind.

Q: Can I use a real word with an unusual spelling?
A: It is common and it often works, but it creates a permanent spelling problem in search and in conversation. Weigh the .com benefit against years of correcting people.

Q: How many names should I shortlist?
A: Five to ten. More slows the decision; fewer and you may find all of them are taken. Check availability on all of them before you fall in love with one.
